Suspect in Illinois mass shooting fires attorney
ROCKFORD, Ill. — The former Green Beret accused of killing three people and wounding three others in a mass shooting three years ago at an Illinois bowling alley has fired his attorney.
According to court records Assistant Winnebago County Public Defender Chrissie Lee entered her appearance to represent on Friday, Aug. 25, to represent 40-year-old Duke Webb, who’s facing three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Webb was previously represented by Chicago attorney Damon Cheronis, who was granted a motion to withdraw from the case.
“[I] fired my hotshot lawyer,” Webb said in a voicemail.
Friday’s movement in the case comes Webb sent a letter to the court in June outside the purview of his attorney requesting that a fitness report from a defense witness be stricken from the record because it was more than 90 days old.
Webb is due back in a Winnebago County courtroom on Sept. 22.
Charge against the former soldier stem from an incident that occurred Dec. 27, 2020, at Don Carter Lanes in Rockford Illinois. Prosecutors say at around 7 p.m., Webb shot six people inside the building, killing three.
Webb, who did four tours in Afghanistan, allegedly started the rampage on the first floor, wounding two teens who were waiting to pick up food. He then made his way upstairs, where he allegedly shot and killed three men, ages 73, 69 and 65.
A Glock .40 caliber and a Glock .380 were recovered at at the scene. Prosecutors say Webb dropped them after the shooting and attempted to blend into the crowd before he was arrested.
Webb remains lodged in the Winnebago County Jail without bond.
