ROCKFORD, Ill. — An Illinois man was sentenced to 50 years prison Tuesday for the 2015 beating death of his wife.

John Carlos Boose, 53, was convicted of first-degree muder in 2021 for killing 46-year-old Regina Poe on Jan. 30, 2015, inside the couple’s Rockford, Illinois, home.

After his conviction, Boose claimed his attorney misrepresented him, which delayed sentencing. Winnebago County Judge Randy Wilt later ruled that Boose’s attorney did not commit any violations during trial.

On Tuesday, Aug. 29, Wilt also sentenced Boose to three years of mandatory supervised release. He was given credit for 3,182 days for the more than eight years he spent in county jail.

A child witnessed the Poe’s death and testified to seeing Boose beat her with his hands and a broom handle.

An autopsy showed that Poe died from blunt-force trauma.
